I will sending my p226 out for new finish soon because the hard chrome on the slide has started to flake off. This gun sees about 3 to 4k rounds a month and nightstand duty as well so I need a finish that can handle the abuse.

I think it will be all silver with black controls but possibly not if the finish wont last.

So my question is should I go with NP3 or Hard Chrome or do you guys have another suggestion? I have also considered just having it done in Black T.

My other question is, does anyone have any suggestion for where to get it done? I was thinking of CCR but will consider other places, I want the best possible finish for longevity.

It's odd that the hard chrome is flaking off, do you know where it was done?

I like hard chrome a lot, it's the hardest finish out ther and if you go to a place, like mahovsky's (search for it), he will nickle then hard chrome the aluminum frame at about the best price out there. That not only gives it a tough covering it raises the rockwell rating to over that of steel.

For other than hard chrome ccr is supposed to be very good, I would probably check out them and their new cerahide coating.

Yeah, I was talking to the gunsmith at work and he was saying hard chrome is the best route to go with the amount of rounds I put through that gun. I will give your friend a holler vic, Thanks. I PM'ed you back Jerry.

Was the P226 a CPO. I have read about problems with CPO's and flaking.

It was a CPO but the finish held up really well for about 12k rounds then it started to flake off. Keep in mind as well that I shoot very hot reloads and 357 sig is kinda hard on things anyway.

Mahovsky does Excellent work and he will also do aluminum frames. He nickle plates the aluminum and then hard chromes it. Some of them like Tripp and awpcogan will not do aluminum frames. His price is also better than most for 145. for the complete aluminun frame and a little cheaper for steel framed ones:
