Keith DW,

Have you had any trouble with external extractors on DW pistols? Why do I ask? A friend sold a CBOB 10mm only because he could not cozy but to the external extractor.

I asked my gunsmith about it and her reply was external extractors were fine as long as they fitted properly. Thanks for your comments.

Richard, your gunsmith is right! Fitting is key. The problem is, most gunsmiths do not know how to properly fit an external in a 1911. :nonono:

I personally think there is no problem with external extractors and in fact have seen less problems with them. Not that there are a lot of problems with internal extractors, but they can get out of tune. Kimber kind of gave external extractors a bad name when they tried them and for some reason failed at it.

I would add that when they work(and they do on most all pistols that have them),external extractors work very well. My Kimber is 100% reliable with all brands of ammo and Novak or Wilson mags,so I may have one of the good ones.

I don't recall hearing too much bad news about the Dan Wesson extractors either. I may be wrong (it's happened a few times) but I believe DW used a design similar,if not the exact same,to S&W which seems to have no problems with their external extractor design. Keith? Dave?

We have probably had just as much trouble with the external extractors as the internal extractors. They do need to be tuned and positioned properly. I will say that internals are far easier to get when the time comes to replace them.

One Reason why i prefer internal you can get um almost anywhere .. harder to find if not impossible to find a External local.. Though i will say my Smith which had a external extractor worked well.. at least the extractor did

The Smith external (used on the older DWs) is one of the most robust designs. My biggest issue with the external is not really performace-related, but that it defies K.I.S.S., in replacing 1 part with 3. External is also difficult to clean thoroughly.

Im new to this forum so first Id like to say hi and im the the proud owner of a PM7 .
I just want the most unbreakable/unstopable Strongest Extractor possible .
Im used to external types but Im very open minded .
which way do I go?
If either of you have any input on the subject ,
I would really be "very" interested to hear your thoughts ?:notworthy:

ND,all the new DW models have internal extractors. As far as brand goes,any steel (non-mim,and don't start another thread please) is good to go.

I want the most unbreakable extractor that i can have installed into either my PM7 or the custom 1911 style pistol that I will have built ,W/o regard to what may come stock in them or vis-a-vis extractor type (internal/external).

Hands down best is the AFTEC, ask a few IPSC shooters. I use them because they hold up to very warm 10mm and again warm .45 Supers..Nobody else's did!

And yes they have two small springs and a shield to retain them..oh well.:shades:

Yep, my AFTEC has at least 8k rounds through her. The one that came from STI failed ONE month after getting it...unfortunately it failed on the 11th stage of the 2006 Florida State Championship and cost me dearly...I shot well for two days and was in the running to place in my class. I replaced it with an Aftec and all has been well ever since.
