I was just reminded of my pet peeve today. I went by the VA for some perscriptions but I get some of them cheaper outside at walmart. There was an older guy with an army hat on in the line in front of me and we started talking and of course up pops the "I was a Navy Seal" guy. Why is is that this guy is always around when these discussions start? The guy is younger than me, probably 30's and he doesn't look like anyone that was a navy seal. I know, I know, don'tjudge a book by it's cover and I know that but I just thought Iwould toss that in. He did say a lot of dumb stuff like px's on board ships (navy doesn't call them px's) and some other really dumb stuff. I have no doubt in my mind he was not an ex seal and probably not even in the navy. It's OK, the wwII vet/retired army guy and me kept on talking and he wandered off. It's still my pet peeve though and it seems like every other guy out is mr. "I was a navy seal".

The older gentleman was a pleasure to talk to and apologized to me for bending my ear. Nothing to apologize for, I really enjoy listening to these guys. If you notice they don't try to pass themselves of as anything other than one of the guys in battles with the germans or japs.

Jerry, that is a good one!!!

I have quite a few friends that are with the S.E.A.L. team and most of them are really cocky!!!! I also know Rudy Boesch from Survivor, he was also a S.E.A.L. I live about 1 mile from where the Navy S.E.A.L. "Special Boat Team" runs their boats out of. I love the sound of those engines at wide open throttle!!!:smile:

I have also had the pleasure of meeting and talking with Carlos Hathcock, the Marine Sniper before he passed.

Yep, I should have asked him his name. He wandered off though.

That's it, seals delta or rangers.

Here it is:

http://www.veriseal.org/about.html

Approximately 95% of the Subjects of verification requests are NavySEAL or other SOF impostors.

I had a guy tell me he was a SEAL one time.

I said, "No kidding? Me too!" Then I said, "Ya know, I don't think you're really a SEAL. If ya really are then give me the secret SEAL's grip." (Stuck out my hand here) He said, "SEALS don't have no secret grip." I said, "See, I knew you weren't a real SEAL, otherwise you'd know the grip."

Works every time. :dancingbananna:

Good one Doc.

Automag, I was around seals at coronado some when I was with the amphibious seabees and we were "neighbors" on that base. I made dive bags for a couple of them in our sail loft for some knives and I still have one of them. When I was on the destroyer we took several of them out to a civillian tanker that had an unexploaded libyan missle in it that they disarmed. One thing has been a constant in the ones I have come accross, they are all great guys.

Exactly. They especially won't walk up on a conversation and start in with some jibberish that doesn't make sense. I think these posers tell the story to civillians so much that they forget that service people can see the bs.

Before becoming a Seal they need to be a UDT team member then just ask what clas of BUDS were you in Jerry. That takes care of many of the people lol. Everyone has a MOS we all did our job that is the bottom line the VA don't care what your MOS was.

I went to Coronado in spring of 1967 for sear training and some boat training. When were you there? Our weapons traning was up with the Marines.

You guys are talking about "posers", any of you ever read
the book STOLEN VALOR, by B G Burkett and Glenna Whitley?

It'll make you puke, but it's worth the read, just to see how
much gall some of those guys have.

It was my second command and it was in the 70's. I went through training twice up in pendleton at the infantry training camp.

I went to assault boat coxswain training several years before that at acb-1 on that base.

I found this not long ago and showed it to the mods. didn't know I still had it:

Sharing the Pet Peeve

When I was with the CIA, doing Black Ops in Cambodia, in the early 70's, Steven Seagal (who's name then was Schlerme Schlaegl) and I, used to hang out with the SEALs, Delta Force and SOCOM, Det One crowd. We used to get into all sorts of arguments about who was "badder" and who was cooler. When not embroiled in CQB with the mavens of the opium Lords, we used to play drinking games, like "Bob". We'd watch the Bob Newhart show and everytime someone said, "Bob", you'd have to slam back a slug of Grappa. Man, those were the days!

What we have to thank here, is popular, Military novelae. Any little nerd with $30 can go into a Barnes and Noble's and walk out with a thousand stories about special forces' activities, training, techniques and tactics. Or, so they think! The result is... Mall Ninjas.

I couldn't agree more, Jerry. All this "posing" cabbage, is nothing, but a (albeit limp-wristed) slap in the face to the REAL guys who stand on the wall for my right to be typing this.

LMAO

I don't know why some guys that serve have the need to embelish their service and why some that didn't feel the need to say they did. I don't know any veteran that looks down on those that do not serve, unless they were draft dodgers of course. Not everyone can or should serve.

I would have served, but was exempt because of my PHD status.
As the recruiter told me, the world needs Post Hole Diggers, too.

OMG when I in the navy I wasnt a seal. However to listen to people talk, apparently I was the only one who wasnt. These people make me sick.

Anyone who would purport themselves to be a SOCOM operator of any kind when they were not has to be the lowest form of filth imaginable.
