Picked up a series 70 Commander yesterday. Good shape, has arched mainspring housing that will be changed. Has an extended slide release, will see if I like or not. Now the serial no. is: CLW016***, is that a series 70 or not? Oh yes, sights will probably get change, old eyes. Right now the weather is such that shooting it is out of the question.

That serial number makes it post 1978, call Colt with it and they will tell you when it was made (1-800-962-2658). Technically, no it is not a Series '70, Colt never made nor marked the Commanders as Series '70. Series '70s were full size models only, Series '70s had the "Accurizor" barrel and collet barrel bushing, which Colt did not put in the Commanders. Now, your pistol could be a pre-Series '80 without the firing pin safety.
