Hello all, newbie here from Indianapolis. My name comes from being a longtime NY Yankees fan, along with the NY Giants, and the Colts, of course.

I found this site through comments over at 1911forum, so here I am. I am going to be buying a 1911, so I'll be reading up on the best things for what I need. I want one that handles hollowpoints well, and it has to be around $500.

Right now my frontrunners are the Taurus and the RIA Tactical. I might consider a Springfield if I can find one in my range. There is a shop here in Indy, Elmore's that has scores of 1911s, but I don't think they carry RIAs. They tend to carry the high end stuff.

The 1911 I'd really like to get, the actual Colt, is out of my price range. Elmore's quoted me $850 for a starting Colt.

So I'll be studying the merits of probably the RIA Tactical and Taurus. The only thing that concerns me about Taurus is the stories I keep reading about their customer service.

I'm only interested in a 1911 for what it was intended for. Close range personal protection. Aside from practicing at the range, I won't be competing or doing long distance target shooting, etc.

Welcome to the forum. You are right, Elmores does not carry the RIA's. At least they weren't carrying them last time I was in there. They are good people to deal with though, Russ has been in business for a long time.

Welcome.

Just so you know, we have some good training nearby, just up I-65 in Lebanon.

The Sheriff is a Gunsite instructor and teaches some classes, plus host other trainers. He teaches an "Intro to Defensive Pistol" that's held on a weekend and only cost $150 the last I knew. He also teaches off-site Gunsite Pistol and Carbine classes.
In addition, he brings in several other excellent instructors for classes throughout the year- Pat Rogers, Steve Tarani, and others. Louis Awerbuck spends most of August there each year. These classes generally run three days each.

If you are interested, I will get you the contact info.

Welcome to the forum, if you cruise the online auctions, you can find used Colts for that kind of money, but ask lots of questions and try to get one that isn't modified highly! I bought an ORM Commander for 500.00 that is practically like new and unaltered from OEM!
