I believe it is just a numerical sequence they used.
You can call Colt and I bet they would give you the real skinny on the matter. ;) 1-800-962-2658

The G70 or 70G is related to the year of manufacture I believe. I have a book at home and will try and look it up when I get there for you. I have a 70G MK IV series 70 that was manuf. somewhere around 74 I think. I will get back with you....

Colt used 70G from 1970 thru 1976 and G70 also started in 1976.
