hello all, what would be your pick of 1911 for IDPA type comp. for $650.00 or less. gun show is this weekend and this money is burning a whole in my pocket:biggrin: thanks.

Well.....
My opinion regarding IDPA (and IPSC) is to use the gun you carry everyday, carried the same way you carry it.
But it appears that I may be in the minority there.

I guess if I were going to buy a gun today to shoot in a match tomorrow, I'd try to find a SA Loaded. I also think an out of the box Colt will perform to the abilities of 98% of the shooters out there.

I doubt you can find a new Colt for the money you are talking, but could probably get a used one for that. You might get the SA for that.

It's frustrating, Barry. I carry a Vz.82 in 9X18 Makarov, but it's not legal in IDPA.
So what's the premise of the activity if you can't shoot what you carry?
Good point.
There is a Back Up Gun division, or category, where I think the 82 would be legal...but...I have only heard of a few BUG matches being held.
Which is too bad, because I'd like to shoot a few. If nothing else, it might make me (and others) work more with those guns to refine what works best for us. I know I've picked up a few things in matches that I've overlooked in practice or training, since I seem to do more stupid things in matches to make them evident.
For your budget a couple of options would be a Springfield XD or a Taurus PT1911 both can be had for around $550. Also, the Xd comes with a basic holster and mag carrier and is available in 9mm, .357 sig, .40 S&W and .45 ACP.
I guess it just comes down to what platform of a pistol you would feel comfy with, I shoot a Kimber 1911 .45 cause of the feel and, I shoot a 1911 in 9mm but stated in IDPA with a SIG P226 .40s&w and shot the Prado California State Championship with SIG P226 in 9mm...But really love the 1911 format now...You can allways rent a few to see what JUST fits you..

Gary.
I also shoot what I carry it makes it more real, less the hollow points. I always carry either a SIG 220 carry, or a full size 1911.
Don't forget to look at the STI Spartan. In your price range and a heck of an entry level gun - if you like the 1911's.

I just traded an XD-45 Tactical for one and I'm pleased with my trade. The XD was a nice gun, just too finicky on the ammo that it liked - plus, I'm a 1911 fan.
Also VERY much in your price range is the gun I own, an RIA Tactical .45

It is in the 400+ range and a very good, dependable shooter.

I will be starting IDPA in the new year... I waited until I got several training sessions with my trainer under my belt so i would not ingrain bad habits.
2007 Championship Equipment Survey reveals 106 Glock pistols were used.
for 1911's:
Colt 8
Kimber 22
Les Baer 6
Para 8
S&W9
Springfield 11
Wilson 6
You may be able to find a good used Colt in the gun show with your money
I normally use 1911 for IDPA. I use a Colt Gold Cup for IDPA, sometimes I also use my Colt Combat Commander both in 45 cals and next year I plan to start using my Colt Combat Commander in 9mm after I change the sights and install a higher beaver tail.

Sometimes I also use my H&K USP in 40 cal., it gives me a slight advantage with the 12 round magazine.
I shoot both an SA XD9 Tactical and an SA XD45 Service in IDPA and USPA. The XD9 was customized by Springer Precision and the XD45 by Canyon Creek. If you want to compete with an inexpensive 1911 platform I recommend the Taurus PT1911, as mentioned above. It is a fine pistol for the money.
I switch from 1911 to Sig's 220's any carry gun, just to make it as real as possible.
